How to Choose a Waterproof Coating for Electronics (Buyer's Guide)

Not all “waterproof” coatings are equal. Before you coat a board, here are the things that actually decide whether your electronics survive water, humidity and washing.

Splash-resistant vs full immersion

Thin varnish/acrylic conformal coatings mainly fight humidity and splashes. If the device can be submerged or sprayed hard, you need a thicker, sealed system engineered for immersion — MGCoat can be engineered to 100 m and beyond when the whole assembly is sealed with no trapped air.

Film thickness & mechanical strength

A ~1 µm varnish guards against damp but scratches off. A real 20–200 µm plastic layer adds mechanical reinforcement against handling, vibration and abrasion. Decide whether you need a thin film or an armoured barrier — and pick a coating that can build up in multiple layers.

Heat-free vs oven-cured

Some coatings need oven curing — risky for heat-sensitive parts and impossible for field repair. A room-temperature, heat-free coating applies and cures anywhere in minutes (≈8–10 min between layers, ~12 h to full strength).

Removability, color & coverage

Will you repair the board later? Choose a coating that's removable with a solvent. Consider color (a non-transparent layer also hides your design from copying), and check coverage: about 1000 ÷ thickness in microns m² per litre (≈7–8.5 m²/L at 100 µm).
