Liquid PCB Plastic Coating
One coat turns any circuit board into a waterproof one. MGCoat lays down a real 20–200 µm plastic armour — with no heat — that locks out water, humidity, salt and washing, so a single drop never destroys an expensive board again. Proven powered underwater at 220 V, and fully reworkable when you need it.
1Product Description
This product is a one-component, polymer-based protective coating designed for waterproofing printed circuit boards, sensors and assembled electronic units. The coating is applied at ambient temperature without ovens or heat. Each application step forms a continuous, opaque, polymer-based layer 20–200 µm thick.
The resulting layer protects against ingress of water, humidity, condensation, salt spray and washing (confirmed in immersion, high relative humidity and salt spray tests). The mechanical strength of the assembly against vibration and abrasion is also increased. Where repair is required, the coating can be removed locally with a dedicated solvent. After repair, the coating can be re-applied.
2Key Characteristics
The characteristics below distinguish this coating from thin conformal coatings and potting.
- Application at ambient temperature (15–45 °C) — no heat, oven or UV required
- Forms a polymer layer with adjustable thickness of 20–200 µm per application step
- Performance confirmed in powered immersion testing, up to 220 V AC
- Operating temperature range −55…+90/110 °C
- Removable with a dedicated solvent; assembly remains repairable
- Opaque coating in three colours; shields circuit design from direct observation
- Increased mechanical resistance to vibration, handling and abrasion
3Typical Applications
The coating is used for electronic assemblies exposed to water, humidity, condensation, washing or corrosive atmospheres, including:
| Automotive electronic control units (ECU) and engine-bay modules | Motorcycle and light-vehicle electronics |
| Drones, FPV equipment and mobile robotics | CCTV cameras and outdoor-mounted equipment |
| Marine electronics, sensors and floating lighting | Battery management systems (BMS) and electric-vehicle modules |
| Solar inverters and renewable-energy electronics | LED boards and outdoor illuminated signage |
| Cryptocurrency mining equipment and immersion-cooling systems | PLC, industrial automation and production-line instrumentation |
| Water-pump and utility control boards | Specialised electronics repair centres |

| Initial dry (touch-dry) | 8–10 minutes |
| Interval between application steps | 10 minutes |
| Time to full mechanical strength | 12 hours |
6Typical Properties, Cured
The values in this table are used to assess the suitability of the layer for the service conditions.
| Property | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Layer thickness per step | 20–200 µm (typical class: 50–100 µm) |
| Operating temperature range | −55…+90/110 °C |
| Thermal stability of layer | Up to 120 °C |
| Adhesion type | Membrane-type adhesion to the assembly surface |
| Mechanical resistance | Resistant to handling, vibration and normal abrasion; vulnerable only to hard scratching (cutting tools / drills) |
| Removal / rework | With a dedicated solvent; local repair and re-application possible |
7Protection Classes
The number of application steps is selected from the table below according to the service conditions and operating voltage.
| Service conditions | Operating voltage | Minimum application steps |
|---|---|---|
| Full immersion in water | 220 V AC | 4 |
| Full immersion in water | ≤ 24 V DC | 3 |
| Exposure to rain / water splash | 220 V AC | 2 |
| Exposure to rain / water splash | ≤ 24 V DC | 2 |
8Performance and Testing
All tests were performed on powered, operating samples.
| Test | Conditions | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Water immersion, powered | 27 V DC / 220 V AC | Continuous operation, no failure |
| High relative humidity | > 95 % RH | Continuous operation, no failure |
| Salt spray (salt fog) | Corrosive saline atmosphere | Continuous operation, no failure |
| Operating temperature range | −55…+110 °C | Within the permitted range |
The cured layer retains its protective function as long as it is not exposed to temperatures above 120 °C or to hard scratching.
9Typical Consumption
The consumption values are used to estimate order volume according to board dimensions and production quantity.
| Property | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Approx. 1 m² per litre at a final thickness of 300–500 µm (multi-step application) |
| Lower thickness | Proportionally larger coated area |
| Factors affecting consumption | Board dimensions, application method, number of steps; calculations should include coating of both sides of the board |
10Directions for Use
The coating is applied by one of three methods: dipping (uniform overall coverage), spraying (even film) or brushing (local repair).
- Clean the board surface of all contamination, solder flux and grease. Then dry the surface completely.
- Mask connectors, sockets and all areas that must remain uncoated.
- Apply the coating by full immersion (or by spray / brush).
- Check the uniformity of the coating and the absence of air bubbles in all areas.
- After 10 minutes of initial drying, apply the next step (2–4 steps in total, according to the protection class).
- After the final step, perform a final visual inspection: the surface must be continuous and free of bubbles.
- Allow 12 hours for full cure and development of full mechanical strength before service or testing.
11Quality Control
After completion of the process, the coating should be visually inspected for continuity, thickness uniformity and the absence of bubbles or uncoated areas. For immersion applications, functional testing under actual service conditions is recommended before volume use.
